4 Simple Tips to Grill the Perfect Greek Pita Bread

Updated: May 17

Greek pita is one of the most versatile breads in Mediterranean cuisine. It can be used for Souvlaki, tasty starters, or even as part of a main dish. Warm, soft inside, and lightly crispy outside, a well-cooked pita can transform any meal. Here are four simple tips, plus a few creative ideas, to make your pita bread stand out.

1. Season It Before Cooking

Get the Chasiotis pita breads defrosted in a room temperature until are soft. Then, brush each pita with extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle sea salt, oregano, and a few drops of fresh lemon juice. This classic Greek combination adds freshness and aroma before the pita even touches the heat.

For something different, try adding:

* Smoked paprika

* Garlic powder

* Chili flakes

* Fresh rosemary

2. Grill for Authentic Flavor

The best method is on a hot grill or grill pan. Cook the pita for 1–2 minutes per side until golden with light grill marks. This gives it the authentic flavor often found in Greek tavernas.

If using an oven, bake at 200°C (390°F) for 2–4 minutes.

3. Finish While Hot

As soon as the pita comes off the grill, brush lightly with olive oil again and add a final squeeze of lemon. Serve immediately while warm and soft.

4. Use It Beyond Souvlaki

Pita is not only for Souvlaki. Try these ideas:

Breakfast

* Toast and top it with Greek honey, walnuts and a touch of cinnamon.

Starters

* Cut into triangles and serve with Tzatziki

* Toast and top with feta, tomato, and olives

* Make pita chips with Greek wild mountain oregano

Main Dishes

* Fill with grilled chicken and salad

* Use as a base for mini Greek pizzas

* Stuff with lamb, onions, and yogurt sauce

Desserts

* Cut pita into strips or triangles, fry it lightly and dust it with: cinnamon sugar, drizzle honey. Enjoy it with Nutella or pistachio dip

Fresh New Idea: Greek Breakfast Pita

Fill hot pita with scrambled eggs, feta cheese, spinach, and herbs. It is a delicious modern twist for breakfast or brunch.

With just a few ingredients and a little creativity, Greek pita can be the star of starters, street food, or full meals.
